PHOTOGRAPHY AND VISUAL LITERACY FOR ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP PROJECT
uganda press photo award
Jun 10, 2020
Location: Kampala
It is with great pleasure that we announce our partnership with the Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) to supplement on the photography education provided to the students through the Photography and Visual Literacy for Active Citizenship (PVLAC) project co-funded by Culture at Work Africa and the European Union.

The project will provide participants with an opportunity to participate in a series of four in-depth workshops and two exhibitions. The workshops will focus on developing visual literacy, critical thinking, research and concept development techniques; we will also delve into the history of photography on the African continent and look into our own, localised histories and archives. The students will develop their technical skills, which they will need to document cultural, societal and ethnic minorities living in Kampala.
By focusing the training on documenting minorities living in Kampala, we wish to take the opportunity to not only educate about photography but also use it to shed light on their lives and hopefully encourage an understanding that will help undo some harmful stereotypes.

The outcomes of this project will be exhibited in public and open spaces within Makerere University. We will also have a rich programme of discussions and presentations accompanying the exhibitions. The dates for the exhibitions will be communicated accordingly during the course of the year, so stay tuned!
